Anupam Dasgupta

Anupam (Partha) DasGupta, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and colleague residing in Freehold, NJ, passed away on Sunday, June 26. He was 75. Anupam was born in Shillong, India. His ancestral home was in Sylhet, Bangladesh. He moved to the United States in 1971 as a doctoral student in physics at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. His professional life took him to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, the Computer Sciences Corporation in Silver Spring, MD, and culminated at AT&T in Monmouth County, NJ, where he worked for close to 30 years before retiring in 2015 as a respected and much-admired systems analyst. Anupam had the unique gift of making each person in his life feel special and deeply loved. His group of friends, relatives, and colleagues spanned the globe. He kept in touch with each person and inquired after them, never missing a birthday or special occasion. He was the repository of the goings-on in everyone’s life. He touched each person who came into his life in ways unique to each one. In his death, each has lost someone who would always be with them in happiness and in sorrow, be there for them in ways deeply genuine and heartfelt. In retirement he continued blossoming in so many ways. He was learning 18 languages casually, four earnestly, on Duolingo, the language learning app. He was in the Diamond League, maintaining a continuous streak of 1,298 days. The language of his soul was Sylheti – of which he was a proud and enthusiastic speaker. He was a sincere student of piano – never missing a day of practice. He read The New York Times with his morning coffee, spending hours until every significant piece of news had been attended to. Everyone who saw him commented that he looked 55 and not 75. He walked five miles a day as he listened to books, totally immersing himself in them. He was in excellent health, his sudden and totally unexpected death coming as an incredible shock to everyone who knew him. He was married for fifty years to Kasturi (Rumu) DasGupta, professor of sociology at Georgian Court University. He is survived by his wife, son Joyee, daughters Rupa and Ria, son-in-law Michael, and his beloved grandson Sagan. He leaves behind his brother Debasish, his sister Subhra, sister-in-law Ujjaini, brother-in-law Shyamal, nieces Madhumanti and Sriyanti, nephews Jeet and Joy, and niece-in-law Pratyusha. He is predeceased by his mother Dipali, father Anil Bhusan, and adopted son Christian Selway. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 1, at Monmouth Memorial Park from 11-1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the causes that meant most to Anupam via the ACLU, Doctors Without Borders, Planned Parenthood, and World Kitchen.
