Susan J. Tomae

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Susan J. Tomae (Lyons), who passed away on February 26, 2025, at the age of 76. Susan was born at St. Michael's Hospital in Newark, NJ, on November 3, 1948, to the late John B. Lyons and Gertrude Lorraine (Wolsky) Lyons. She was raised in Irvington and spent most of her life as a beloved wife and mother in Neshanic Station, a historic district of NJ located in Branchburg Township, where she died peacefully in the family home of 40 years. Throughout her life, Susan was known for her feisty yet lovable spirit. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and let you know how she felt, one way or the other. She also had a loving, kind, and generous soul, which combined to create the remarkable character cherished by her closest family and friends. Throughout the entirety of her life, she was a doting wife and loving mother to her husband and children. She enjoyed doing her crossword puzzles, brainteasers, and word searches, filling countless puzzle books over the years. Her creative side saw her putting together a variety of scrapbooks and photobooks, capturing all of her favorite times and cherished memories with family and friends. Her artistic side saw her utilize her painting talents, spending countless hours with local friends painting ceramics, many of which will live on as family heirlooms. Her love and compassion for animals is reflected in the many carousel horses she collected. More importantly, it showed in all the family pets she cared for and raised throughout her life. Susan is survived by her husband, Anthony of Neshanic Station; her two sons, Thomas of Tinton Falls and his wife, Jenna; and Anthony Jr. of Forked River; and her loving grandchildren, Caden, Thomas Jr., and Katherine. She is also survived by her brothers, John Lyons and Dennis Lyons, and her sister, Geralyn Lyons. Susan was preceded in death by her sisters, Patricia Burke and Barbara Richter. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Visitation will be held at Bongarzone Funeral Home, 2400 Shafto Road, Tinton Falls, NJ, on Sunday, March 2nd, from 2 to 5 PM. Susan’s funeral mass will be held on Monday, March 3rd, at the Church of St. Anselm located at 1028 Wayside Road, also in Tinton Falls, at 10:30 AM, followed by entombment at Hollywood Cemetery in Union, NJ.
