Maria Storniolo

Strong, kind, selfless. These are but only a few words that describe the wonderful woman that Maria Storniolo was. Born on June 13, 1931 in the small fishing town of Porticello, Sicily. She was one of nine siblings: six girls and three boys. At just 16 years old she stepped up to be the matriarch of the family when her mother passed away. This was the first of many scenarios where she displayed strength for her family. Cooking, cleaning, and taking care of her siblings came naturally to Maria. No matter what, family came first. On June 30, 1956 Maria started her own family by marrying Pietro. The lovely couple raised three beautiful children, (Maria, Silvana, and Anthony). Sadly tragedy struck when Pietro suddenly passed away in 1975. Yet again, Maria had to display strength for her family and courageously immigrated to the United States about one year later. There she worked in a garment factory in Brooklyn and cared for her three children. Again, family was always at the forefront. November 27, 1981 was when Maria became a Nonna for the first time. She loved all of her grandchildren and we couldn’t have asked for a better Nonna. When I think of Nonna’s Brooklyn apartment, I think of Faicco sandwiches and fresh mozzarella. I think of Christmas Day with my cousins and drinking too much Ginger Ale. I think of playing Cinque and gambling for the first time. (With only nickels of course). I think of the love and smell of Nonna’s sauce that filled the air. If there was something we wanted to eat, it was made. No questions asked. Family was everything to her. Nonna displayed strength up until her final days. She lived twice the time the nurse’s gave her thanks to her incredible sisters Paola, Rita, and Giuseppa and her amazing son Anthony. Without these wonderful people to care for our beloved Nonna, we wouldn’t have had those extra moments with her. Thank you for the love, care, and patience you provided her with. It meant the world to her even though she was unable to express that. We must all find comfort knowing she is now at eternal peace with her husband Pietro. Nonna, we will love you forever and will one day be together again. Forte, gentile, altruista. Queste sono solo alcune parole che descrivono la meravigliosa donna che era Maria Storniolo. Nata il 13 giugno 1931 nel piccolo paese di pescatori di Porticello, in Sicilia. Era una di nove figli: sei ragazze e tre ragazzi. A soli 16 anni si è fatta avanti per diventare la matriarca della famiglia quando sua madre è morta. Questo è stato il primo di molti scenari in cui ha mostrato forza per la sua famiglia. Cucinare, pulire e prendersi cura dei suoi fratelli e sorelle era naturale per Maria. Non importa nulla, la famiglia viene prima. Il 30 giugno 1956 Maria fondò la propria famiglia sposando Pietro. La bella coppia ha cresciuto tre bellissimi bambini, (Maria, Silvana e Anthony). Purtroppo la tragedia colpì quando Pietro morì improvvisamente nel 1975. Ancora una volta, Maria dovette mostrare forza per la sua famiglia e coraggiosamente emigrò negli Stati Uniti circa un anno dopo. Lì lavorava in una fabbrica di abbigliamenti a Brooklyn e si prendeva cura dei suoi tre figli. Ancora una volta, la famiglia era sempre in prima linea. Il 27 novembre 1981 Maria divento per la prima volta nonna. Amava tutti i suoi nipoti e non avremmo potuto chiedere una Nonna migliore. Quando penso all'appartamento di Nonna a Brooklyn, penso ai panini di Faicco e alla mozzarella fresca. Penso al giorno di Natale con i miei cugini e a bere troppo Ginger Ale. Penso di giocare a Cinque e di giocare d'azzardo per la prima volta (Con solo monetine ovviamente). Penso all'amore e all'odore della salsa di Nonna che riempiva l'aria. Se c'era qualcosa che volevamo mangiare, era fatto. Nessuna domanda chiesta. La famiglia era tutto per lei. Nonna ha mostrato forza fino ai suoi ultimi giorni. Grazie alle sue incredibili sorelle Paola, Rita e Giuseppa e il suo fantastico figlio Anthony. Senza queste persone meravigliose che si prendessero cura della nostra amata Nonna, non avremmo avuto quei momenti extra con lei. Grazie per l'amore, la cura e la pazienza che le ha fornito. Per lei significava il mondo, anche se non era in grado di esprimerlo. Dobbiamo trovare tutti conforto sapendo che ora è in eterna pace con suo marito Pietro. Nonna, ti ameremo per sempre e un giorno saremo di nuovo insieme.
