George L. De Lage

George De Lage of Tinton Falls passed away Friday at home. George was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. George was a dedicated family man who truly loved Joan, his wife of 50 years, and his children Stanley and Gina. Being a grandfather was a great joy in George's life and he spent much of his time with his grandchildren Stanley Jr. 16, Mary 14, Edward 12, Lauren 9 and Adam 6. Whether it was taking them to new and exciting places, sharing his profound wisdom, or simply playing with them in the yard George was always a gentle, loving, caring grandpa. George was also a wonderful father-in-law to Barbara De Lage and William Varela and step¬grandfather to Kassie. George was born in Florida and grew up in Keansburg with his mother, Mary De Lage (deceased), sister, Kathy Burdge of Navesink and brother Jack De Lage of Texas. Growing up, he spent many summers with his cousins at his aunt and uncle's house in Florham Park. George worked as a butcher for 12 years and was a member of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union Local 464 while attending Kean College to earn his bachelors and then masters in education. George was a teacher at Indian Hill Elementary School for 30 years (retiring in 2002) serving as president of the Holmdel Township Education Association for most of his tenure. Students, parents, fellow teachers and administrators remember George as a man of indomitable strength of character and integrity who always stood up for what was right even if it was not the popular stance to take. George was a mentor to hundreds of students during his time at Indian Hill always going above and beyond to support and guide them in a positive way. George truly believed that all children are born with amazing potential and that they just need to be nurtured and given the opportunity to excel. George De Lage was a man with a heart of gold who helped so many people in so many ways and who never expected or wanted anything in return or accolades for having done so. He was a bright star in the lives of so many and that light will continue to shine on in all of the people that were fortunate enough to have known him.
