Barbara Ann Meehan

Barbara Ann (Douglas) Meehan, aged 74, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at her home in Ocean NJ (Rolling Meadows). She passed peacefully, surrounded by the family she lived for, after a valiant two year battle with cancer. Barbara was born on April 19, 1942 in Kearny NJ, to the late Harold and Teresa Douglas. In 1960, Barbara married the love of her life, James Meehan, at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Newark NJ after his completion of service in the US Navy. Barbara and James lived in Belleville NJ, and then settled in Edison NJ where they raised their three loving children for the next 34 years. For the last 14 years Barbara and Jim have lived happily in retirement in Ocean NJ. Barbara’s faith was very strong, and she was an active parishioner at St. Anselm’s Roman Catholic Church in Wayside NJ. Family was Barbara’s passion and delight. For many years, Sunday dinners at Barbara and Jim’s house were regular and happy events. Barbara loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and her four sisters and their families. She loved cooking and baking. She was a fabulous cook and found much joy bringing together her love of family and her love of food by hosting holiday gatherings at her home. Barbara was a devoted Grandmother who spent countless hours talking to her grandchildren about their activities and watching them play hockey, baseball, basketball, football, perform in plays and dance in competitions. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, James Meehan. She is also survived by her daughter Lisa (Meehan) Valenzuela and her husband Joseph; her son James Meehan and his wife Julie; and her daughter Barbara Meehan and her fiancé Dominic Bracalante. She was preceded in death by her sister Cecilia Douglas; and she leaves behind her sisters Mary Ackerson, Elaine Massari, and Helen Caruso and her husband Angelo. In addition, Barbara will be deeply missed by her adoring six grandchildren; Kailey, Cameron, Jake, Kyle, Joey and Jack. She also leaves behind numerous loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Visitation on Thursday January 5, 2017 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Church of the Precious Blood in Monmouth Beach, 72 Riverdale Avenue, Monmouth Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday January 6, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Entombment to follow at Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society at cancer.org/donate
