Allan M. Bell Sr.

Allan Michael Bell Sr. (“Al”), 74, of Toms River, NJ, passed away at his home on July 1st after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Al is survived by his loving partner of 29 years, Beverly Scalamoni, stepdaughter Sharon Hadjimarkos (husband Jimmy) and grandson, Theodore; Brother Raymond G. Bell, sister Joanne Bell-Demeo (brother-in-law Michael), brother Michael A. Bell (sister-in-law Leslie); Nephews Michael (wife Jen & their children Michael & Alana), Spencer, & Evan; Sons Allan Michael Bell, Jr, & Michael Bell; Grandchildren. Al was predeceased by his parents, George J. Bell, Jr & Irene Varhola Bell; Son, David Bell. Al was born on August 10, 1950, in Newark, NJ and grew up in Newark’s North Ward. Al graduated from Essex Catholic Boys High School in Newark in 1969. While in high school, Al, along with his lifelong friends, Leon, Steve, Earl, Byk, Denis, Chuckie & Ralphy started Club Nork in 1968 in East Orange, expanding to other locations in Newark. Here is where Al and his friends enjoyed many parties. Club Nork continues to exist today as the members meet as often as monthly for lunch, most recently at Cafe Napoli. Al was drafted to the United States Marine Corps & served in the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1972. Upon his return, Al started to work for General Motors Assembly Plant in Linden NJ for 30 years, first as a Line Assembler and later as an Inspector. Al was a member of the UAW Local 595 and continued to attend regular meetings up until his passing. For years, Al was the “automotive mechanic” for his extended group of friends and family. Al lived in Union, NJ during his career. Al’s love of fishing, family & friends led him to make frequent visits to his sister Joanne’s home in Toms River where he would spend weekends at the Jersey Shore, eventually meeting Beverly on July 12, 1996. Beverly & Al enjoyed dancing and listening to oldies music, especially the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Al moved to Toms River and eventually retired there. He spent his days enjoying his family’s dogs and spending time w/ his great nephew and niece as well as taking long drives with Beverly to Huddy Park, Island Heights and Seaside. When well, he enjoyed daily walks and bike rides in his neighborhood. He loved soft pretzels from Wawa and enjoyed shopping at Boscov's. Al never missed an episode of Cramer’s “Mad Money”. Al will always be remembered for being a strong and independent gentleman who never complained. He put the needs of others above his own. His response when asked if he needed help, was, “No, thank you”. Although often quiet, Al had an infectious smile and a sharp sense of humor. Al’s legacy of loyalty, devotion and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Visitation will be held from 10-11 on Thursday July 10th at St Anselm’s chapel, 1028 Wayside Rd, Tinton Falls, NJ 07712. Funeral mass service to follow in the main church at 11am.
