Adele Ferri

Adele Ferri, 97, passed away in the early morning of New Year’s Eve. Adele was born August 28th, 1925, to Joseph and Theresa Campanile, and was the youngest of seven children. Her parents were born and raised in Italy, her father a prominent fencer and owned his own studio. The family moved from Italy to Canada, and then settled in Manhattan, New York where Adele was born. Adele told many stories of hard times, with little food, clothing, and heat during the cold winters. Growing up in poverty, she learned to appreciate everything she had and found tremendous joy in giving to others, especially those less fortunate. She worked as a seamstress and made many of her own clothes including her own wedding gown. At the age of 19, Adele moved to Brooklyn after getting married to Salvador Cusumano and had her first child, Joseph. Over ten years later, they divorced, and she was left to raise her son on her own with minimal resources. Several years later remarried John Louis Ferri and had three children, John, Chris, and Theresa. They lived in Greenwich Village and were active in the Catholic community. Adele and her husband facilitated multiple programs that provided countless resources to the community such as playground equipment, toys on Christmas, and free summer lunch programs. Over the years Adele suffered many losses including her husband, all three of her sons, the third of which passed in the early days of Covid, all of her siblings and in-laws, her niece, daughter-in-law, and countless friends. Despite her repeated losses, Adele managed to find joy in the simplest of things. Trips to anywhere, shopping, bingo, and doing kind deeds for others gave her tremendous joy. Her positive spirit and zest for life was never ending. She was the most forgiving person, only saw the good in people, and never failed to count her blessings no matter her circumstances. She was a true survivor. Adele was loved by everyone who knew her and will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity. Her memory lives on in her youngest child, Theresa, family members, grandchildren, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her legacy will carry on forever, reminding us that no matter the circumstances, we have the choice and the power to live life to the fullest, and to fill our lives with meaningful acts of love and kindness.
